What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are the aromatic compounds found in plants which are highly concentrated chemical compounds. These compounds help protect the plant from environmental conditions, assist with pollination and responsible for the plant’s aroma. The chemistry of the plants is studied and then extracted on a molecular level. This shows how the essential oils will interact with our bodies- like decreasing inflammation, helping with histamine response or even helping cognitive memory lay pathways down.

Potency is key with essential oils. In fact, essential oils are 50-70 times stronger than dried herbs. Essential oils work with our body on a cellular level to protect against environmental threats, inhibit virus reproduction, oxygenate the cells, and boost the immune system.

How Do You Use Essential Oils?

The sense of smell is a tool that can elicit powerful physiologic, mental, and emotional responses. Essential oils are quickly absorbed by the smell receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system by way of the olfactory nerve. The limbic system is part of the brain that supports a variety of functions including smell, emotions, behavior, and memory. For this reason, essential oils have an especially powerful effect via aromatic application. Some essential oils induce uplifting or invigorating effects, while others are more calming.

Diffusers are a great way to spread essential oils in a larger space like a room or office but not necessary. A drop of oil can be placed in the hand and rubbed together then cupped over the mouth and nose to create a powerful aroma. I like to place a few drops of oil in a water spray bottle and spray linens and rooms.

Topical application is a very effective method for applying essential oils. Because essential oils have low molecular weights and are lipid soluble, they easily penetrate the skin. Once absorbed, they stay in the applied area for a localized benefit. Although essential oils are readily absorbed, there are many ways to increase absorption. Using a light massage or heat will increase the blood flow to the area of application, in turn improving distribution throughout the body.
To decrease the likelihood of developing a skin sensitivity, especially on young or sensitive skin, it is advisable to use a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil or unscented lotion) to dilute more potent oils and when trying an oil for the first time.
The recommended dilution ratio is typically one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil. Use of a carrier oil can also increase absorption, especially in skin that is dry or flaky as it helps moisturize the skin and slow evaporation of the oil.
It’s always advisable to use several small doses throughout the day rather than a single large dose. Start with the lowest possible dose (1–2 drops). A topical dose can be repeated every 4–6 hours as needed. Since every individual is unique, the dose will vary for each individual based on size, age, and overall health status.

When ingested, essential oils directly enter the bloodstream via the gastrointestinal tract, where they are transported throughout the rest of the body. Essential oils are lipid soluble so they are readily transported to all organs of the body, including the brain. Then, like all things we consume, essential oils are metabolized by the liver and other organs and are then excreted.
The composition of essential oils is highly complex. Each constituent possesses a unique set of biochemical properties that react with cells and organs in different ways. Although these mechanisms of action are not completely understood, the positive end results have been demonstrated. However, the body is only equipped to handle appropriate doses of essential oils.

Proper dosing according to labeling recommendations and other professional guidelines should be strictly followed to avoid toxicity.

When using oils in cooking remember that oils are MUCH more potent than dried herbs so start with a small amount of oil. For some of the more powerful oils an easy method to start small is dipping the end of a toothpick in oil and then add to food rather than dropping the oil from the bottle.
Essential oils can also be added to smoothies, tea, coffee, water or in a veggie capsule if you want the benefit but not the taste of the oil.
*Always remember to only take oils internally that have a supplements facts box on the bottle.

Why Choose Doterra?

You are not only choosing the highest quality and safest essential oils available, but you are also choosing a company that operates with integrity.

dōTERRA is the largest essential oil company in the world and has over 6 million members who are actively making their homes healthier places.

Commitment to Quality and Purity

The purer the essential oil, the more powerful the results. Many essential oils available to purchase are not pure. Often, they contain fillers or other elements that dilute and alter the purity, thus diminishing the healthful qualities of the oil. In order to guarantee that the oils you use are pure, dōTERRA and a team of highly skilled professionals formulated a successful testing procedure that qualifies dōTERRA oils as uniquely pure and free of contaminants. This quality protocol is called CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®.

During the CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade process, each batch of oils is subjected to extensive and rigorous testing that ensures the purity, potency, and consistency of the essential oils. Because quality oils can empower individuals and families, dōTERRA makes it their priority to provide you with the purest and most effective oils possible. With each dōTERRA product, you can be confident that you are receiving the highest quality essential oils, and that our effective standard testing methods are created with you and your loved ones in mind.

CPTG Testing Process

The purity of an essential oil is its most important characteristic. An essential oil that isn’t pure means you run the risk of putting germs, heavy metals, or contaminates onto or into your body, which can provoke irritation, adverse effects, or even sickness. Without an accepted standard for essential oil quality, doTERRA created its own testing process, calling it
CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®. The CPTG process certifies that there are no added fillers, synthetic ingredients, or harmful contaminants in their essential oils that would reduce their efficacy. doTERRA even goes a step further, putting all their products and the packaging through a battery of tests to ensure a long and effective shelf-life. This protocol ensures potency, purity, and consistency batch to batch.
Quality and potency is the dōTERRA  golden standard. In fact, you can find a lot number at the bottom of your bottles and enter that number on the " source to you" website to find the batch and source of that specific oil. If you have any issues or concerns with your oil the lot number acts as an identifying number to trace back and assure quality assurance to customers.

Global Sourcing for Maximum Potency

Another crucial element in providing a quality essential oil is guaranteeing that there is maximum potency. For an essential oil to obtain a strong potency, the plant it originates from must be grown in the right environment. When plants are grown in optimal soil, temperature, and climate, they produce a higher quality of potency in the essential oil.

To maintain this level of potency, dōTERRA networks with experienced farmers around the world that intimately know how to grow plants in their native environment. This process is called sourcing. The sourcing process ensures that plants are taken care of properly and harvested at the proper stage by growers who have generations of harvesting knowledge. Once the plants reach their prime, they are then gathered and carefully distilled by artisans, making oils that are potent, consistent, and pure.

Making a Difference Through Healing Hands Foundation

One of the best parts about dōTERRA is that they give back to the communities where they source their oils. Through their non-profit organization, the dōTERRA Healing Hands Foundation, local projects such as sanitation and water availability, health care, and educational opportunities are provided to farming communities for current and future generations. They do this by partnering with organizations and dōTERRA Wellness Advocates to offer hope to millions around the world. Through the foundation’s efforts, lives are freed of disease and poverty, and communities are empowered with the tools needed to become self-reliant.
