Spring Equinox: Balance, Beginnings & How to Work With It

Welcome to the Spring Equinox (equal night) also known as Alban Eilir (light of the earth). On this day we have equal light and equal darkness, and for those of us in the northern hemisphere the promise of increasing light to come. The suns rays will continue to move north during this season until they reach the peak on the Summer solstice and start to move downward towards the equator.
Historically this day was met with celebration and signs of fertility and renewal (often why eggs and rabbits are associated with this time of year). Many cultures from the ancient saxons, the germanic tribes and the mayans had feasts and built statues to their respective gods. To this day many of these celebrations continue. This morning was met with a large crowd of celebration in Stonehenge. The only time visitors are permitted to be near the sacred stones of Stonehenge is on Equinoxes and solstices.

Astrological Insights
Today is not only marked as the Spring Equinox but also as the beginning of the astrological new year. The sun entering Aries today marks the first month of the astrological new year. I've always favored celebrating the new year in the Spring when it's warm (or the promise of warmer times is showing), and the rebirth and renewal feels palpable. In January I feel like I'm still cocooned in the safety of hibernation and winter. Planting seeds in the winter is near impossible. Think of the frozen ground and trying to stubbornly force the earth to open and plant seeds. This image is how I see setting intentions and resolutions on January first. In the Spring it feels fresh and new and I feel that pull to be ready to begin. It's ok to not follow the social norms if winter is not the time for your "new year, new me."
Another wonderful thing about this day is mercury is finally going direct (coming out of retrograde). Mercury is a planet that rules communication and travel which can include everything from business negotiations and contracts to travel mishaps to car trouble or extra fees where you weren't expecting. Being retrograde during Pisces season adds a deeper and emotional element to the disconnect and room for miscommunications and hurt realationships. For some people they experience the shadow period coming off the mercury retrograde causing you to still deal with issues for a few days to a week at the beginning or end of a mercury retrograde (this can be sign specific so if you're curious if this is you drop me a comment).
Today the sun is meeting Neptune in the sign of Aries for the first time in 150 years. Neptune is the planet of delusion and dreams. The planet of delusion and dreams is coming into the sign of action and fire. Think of the possibilities! The planet which holds your wildest dreams for your best life is merging energy with a sign who likes to make things happen. Not only is this opportunity opening, there are no retrogrades for the next 7 weeks! If you were looking for a sign to take big action this next week is it! Today is a day to celebrate and meditate with those dreams and thoughts- remember it's a mercury retrograde shadow so the action can wait until next week. Preparing the dream today and this weekend is a perfect way to supercharge your path.

Spring Things and Rituals
Whether you follow a tradition or don't know where to start, the key is to honor the changing energy in a way that feels right for you. Here are a few rituals to help you tap into the energy of the equinox:
Spring Cleaning
This can be as simple as doing a basic clean throughout your house (or even one space if cleaning is hard right now) or as deep as refreshing your whole space. Vacuum/ sweep the areas that get neglected; under furniture, behind appliances, etc and open windows. Diffuse essential oils like lemongrass, wild orange, basil or peppermint. Some enjoy burning sage, basil or lavendar to cleanse the space and make sure to OPEN WINDOWS. Opening windows lets the old energy of the season out and lets the new Spring take up space in your home. My nonna was methodical about establishing the change and harnessing the energy on solstices and equinoxes to stay connected to her home.
Stepping into Nature
Taking a long walk, enjoying an activity outside whether it's dinner on the patio or an evening sparkling water is a beautiful way to be present in nature if the weather allows. Ground yourself and take mindful breaths outside noticing what you hear, feel and see.
Seasonal Snacks
Is there a recipe you love once the weather starts getting warmer? Or maybe eating dinner with what you hope to grow in your garden. Fresh staples in season help add to the quiet celebration of this day.

Journal Prompts
  • Where in my life am I out of balance—giving too much or holding back too much?
  • What does “true balance” actually feel like in my body and daily life?
  • What parts of myself have I been neglecting that now need equal attention?
  • How do I currently navigate the tension between rest and action?
  • What vision or dream has been quietly living in me that I haven’t acted on yet?
  • What does my ideal life feel like—not just look like?
  • Where in my life am I being called to take bold, decisive action?
  • What have I been waiting for that I already feel ready to begin?
  • If I trusted myself fully, what would I start right now?
  • What does courage look like for me in this next season?
  • What is one grounded step I can take toward it this week?
  • Where do I need more imagination—and where do I need more discipline?
  • How can I balance vision with action without overwhelming myself?
  • What am I stepping out of, and what am I stepping into?

The balance of light and dark today is a reminder that we’re allowed to hold both rest and momentum at the same time. You can clear a drawer and call it spring cleaning, step outside for three deep breaths and call it a nature ritual, cook one seasonal meal and call it a celebration. None of it has to be perfect to be powerful. Let the energy of this season support you in choosing what feels sustainable rather than what looks impressive. Your path into this next chapter can be gentle, grounded, and entirely your own.
Happy Spring Equinox my friends.
