Hope Not Fear

“May your choices reflect your hopes not your fears.”
~Nelson Mandela

There is a lot of fear to go around right now. Scrolling through social media, turning on the TV or even just the eye contact with strangers in public. There’s a palpable tension with each turn making it hard not to feel the collective anxiousness.

How do we transmute these fears into hope?

In yoga class we used Nelson Mandela’s quote as our intention to observe where in our practice we were coming form fear or from hope. Fear says, “My knee will hurt in that position.” Hope says, “I’m going to safely try this position as I adjust my body and breath.” Fear says, “I’m not a ‘yogi’ if I don’t do the whole practice.” Hope says, “Yoga is my state of being. When I am breathing I am yoga.” Noticing and observing just how many times in a yoga practice you come from fear instead of hope can illuminate where the change can start.

So challenge yourself to notice in the next 24 hours to observe your mindset. Are you making choices and decisions based from fear of what could happen? Or to avoid an outcome?
Or are you making decisions based on hope for the future? How can you shift your actions and decisions to come from hope?
